As an international student you’ve probably already seen a lot of different sides of Utrecht (or you’re going to). And as a local, I have to say, there are some pretty fun activities in this beautiful and vibrant city. That includes concerts, playing pool, bowling, escape rooms – and not to forget all of the amazing restaurants this town has to offer. But what about museums? Utrecht has a lot of them and they’re really worth a visit. We’ve made a list of the 6 museums in Utrecht to check out. Come on, let’s sniff some culture!
(Don’t forget that, most of the time, you can enjoy a nice discount on your tickets with your student card!)
Museums in Utrecht
First of all, when we think of museums, they’re mostly about art. Utrecht also has some great artwork hanging at the walls of its museums. One of these museums in Utrecht is Centraal Museum – it’s not the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, but it has a pretty nice collection for any art lover.
Centraal Museum, Agnietenstraat 1, Tue – Sun 11.00h – 17.00h.
Want to see more art? Go to the Rietveld Schröder House or Museum Catharijneconvent.
Rietveld Schröder House
The Rietveld Schröder House is designed by Gerrit Rietveld, a well-known artist within the art movement De Stijl. He didn’t only design the house, he also decorated it. Maybe you’ve already seen this architectural wonder – it’s near the University College buildings (UCU Campus).
Rietveld Schröder House, Prins Hendriklaan 50, Tue – Sun 11.00h – 17.00h.
Museum Catharijneconvent shows the history of Christianity in the Netherlands. You can see centuries-old art as well as contemporary art – even a few beautiful paintings of Rembrandt are displayed here. So if you’re interested in the religious history of the Netherlands, stop by and take a look at the rich collection of artworks.
Museum Catharijneconvent, Lange Nieuwstraat 38, Tue – Fri 10.00h – 17.00h, Sat & Sun 11.00 – 17.00h.
This one is for all the railway fans: you must have heard of the iconic Railway Museum, or Spoorwegmuseum (that’s how we call it in Dutch). You haven’t? Then you should really pay a visit to this museum full of trains! And no, you can’t only watch them, there’s a whole experience to it – including spectaculair attractions to have the train ride of your life!
Railway Museum, Maliebaanstation 1, Tue – Sun 10.00h – 17.00h.
Feeling like spending the day in full nature? Plan your visit to the Botanical Gardens, near the Uithof. There are thousands of plants here from all around the world. In Summer, there’s even a Tropical Butterfly Festival. Doesn’t that sound just perfect? Be aware: you can only visit the gardens from March until the 1st of December.
Botanical Gardens, Budapestlaan 17, Mon – Sun 10.00h – 16.30h.
And last but no least: one of the most special museums in Utrecht is DOM under. Which is – the name says it all – located under the Dom. Discover 2000 years of Utrecht history at this underground experience at the famous Dom Square. You can walk around with a special torch and find out everything there is to know about the great history of Utrecht. Are you ready?
DOMunder, Domplein 4, Tue – Sun (check departure times on the website).
