Unfortunately, finding a place to live in Utrecht is not always easy. Therefore we would like to give you some tips on finding accommodation in Utrecht.
Student Housing Companies
Firstly, try to sign in at SSH. This is a student housing company with student housing at different locations throughout the city. They have a fixed number of furnished Reserved Accommodations available for exchange students and internationals, but these usually fill up quickly. If the latter is the case, sign up anyway. They might not have accommodation available right away, but perhaps a reserved accommodation becomes available later due to a cancellation. Besides the Reserved Accommodations, SSH offers Regular Accommodation. This option is most suitable for students that are staying in Utrecht for more than one year, as it can take at least twelve months before you will be invited after applying to a room.
Another great new option is Canvas Utrecht. Canvas Utrecht offers 682 brand new modern studios for students for long stay. All the studios come fully furnished with a double bed, study space, wardrobe & mirror, breakfast bar and smart storage. Plus, you can enjoy an ensuite bathroom and kitchenette all to yourself. The residence offers social, games and study areas for you to enjoy yourself with friends. Canvas Utrecht is perfectly located for all major universities and colleges in the city, with tram links and bus routes right outside the front door. Get in touch and find your perfect student room.
Finding a room through mediation websites
Another thing you could try is using mediation websites. There are multiple mediation websites available where people offer accommodations. Unfortunately, some of these websites are only available in Dutch. However, www.kamernet.nl also has an English option. There are a number of options to specify your search (location, budget, size of the room etc.) and after doing so, you will get a list of rooms that suit your criteria. In order to place a reaction to a room, you need to create an account on the website. Other websites you can check out are www.kamerutrecht.com, www.kamersutrecht.nl, www.rooming.nl, www.kamertje.nl (Dutch only), www.kamers.nl, www.kamer.nl, www.huurdistrict.nl, www.utrechtkamers.nl, www.sfshousing.nl, www.tijdelijkekamers.nl, www.kamerstunt.nl, www.directwonen.nl, www.findroommate.nl.
Another option is to rent a room from a student who is going abroad as well. On the website of Housing Anywhere you can offer and find (furnished) rooms that are available for a shorter period of time.
Finding a room through Facebook
Next to these websites, more and more people try to find a room(mate) on Facebook. An advantage of these Facebook pages is that reacting to a room is completely free. A possible disadvantage is that you may have a lot of competition since many people try looking for a room through these pages. You could have a look at the following Facebook pages:
- Find a room(mate) or house in Utrecht (kamer in Utrecht)
- Kamer in Utrecht
- Rooms/ Kamer/ Zimmer in Utrecht
- Kamers Gezocht/Aangeboden
- Kamers, Studio’s en appartementen in Utrecht
- Kamer huren in Utrecht? Like ons
These Facebook pages all work according to a similar principle. You react on an offer, tell them something about yourself and explain why the room appeals to you. Afterwards, you may or may not get a reaction from the house. If you get a positive reaction, they usually invite you for a ‘hospiteeravond’. This is an evening where potential renters come to see the room and meet the roommates. After the hospiteeravond, they decide who will get the room. Don’t get discouraged if you have to go to a few of these hospiteeravonden, it may take a while till you have found the house that is right for you! Also, if you cannot be at the hospiteeravond in person because you are looking from your home country, suggest a skype meeting to get to know the house.
Furnishing your non-reserved accommodation room
There are several options available when you rent a room that is empty upon arrival. There are specific companies that specify in renting all furniture you need, for exactly the time period you need it. Swapcouch is one such a company.
Stay with a host or guest family
If you’re new in town and looking for a unique experience, consider staying with a host. Staying with a host or guest family will provide you with a soft landing in town and is the perfect way to get in touch with the Dutch culture and language. You’ll have your own private room and shared facilities like a kitchen and bathroom. There are several hosts and guest families in Utrecht available and specifically looking for international students. For example, Hospi Housing can help you to get in touch with a suitable host and will provide you with the advice you need!
Real Estate Agencies/Landlords (mainly non-reserved accommodations)
If you don’t feel like looking for a room online, try contacting a real estate agent. Real estate agents often rent out single rooms. It is also possible to rent out a full apartment, which might be a good option if you want to live together with someone.
- http://www.funda.nl/huur/utrecht/ (has an English option)
- http://maxxvastgoed.nl/ (also has an English option)
- There are many other options in Utrecht.
An advantage of renting through a real estate agent is that you don’t have to go through the hassle of ‘hospiteeravonden’. A disadvantage is that these rooms are often slightly more expensive than rooms that you find through direct contact, as you pay the real estate agent a fee as well.
When it proves too difficult to find something in Utrecht, you can consider living in a different town nearby, such as
- De Bilt
- De Meern
- Stichtse Vecht
You can try to find a room in these towns through the same websites mentioned in the second paragraph. Rooms outside of Utrecht are often less expensive (although you will have to travel more to get to Utrecht).
If you found a room but you're struggling with the building, rental price or landlord, you can contact Huurteam Utrecht for help. They also have a rental price checker to check if you're paying too much.
Good luck with your search and enjoy your stay in Utrecht!
